Is Neurofeedback Successful and Permanent?

Neurofeedback is based on learning, not on temporarily changing brain activity through external means. Because of this, the changes it supports are generally understood as learned skills rather than short-term effects.

When the brain learns new, more efficient patterns of regulation, those patterns can persist — much like learning to ride a bicycle or developing better posture. Once learned, the skill does not need to be constantly “reapplied” in order to exist.

That said, neurofeedback does not guarantee permanent results in the same way a mechanical repair might. The brain is dynamic, and patterns can be influenced by ongoing factors such as stress, health changes, sleep, and lifestyle.

Many people experience lasting benefits after completing a course of training, particularly when:

  • Training is individualized

  • Enough time is allowed for learning to stabilize

  • Changes are practiced and reinforced in daily life

Some individuals choose to return for occasional refresher sessions, especially during periods of high stress or transition. Others maintain their gains without additional training.

Success in neurofeedback is best understood as improved capacity for self-regulation, rather than the elimination of a single symptom. This can show up as greater emotional flexibility, improved focus, more stable sleep, or a stronger sense of calm and resilience.

At The Balanced Brain, we focus on supporting durable learning rather than short-term effects. Progress is reviewed over time to help determine when training is complete and whether additional support would be beneficial.
