How can I tell if a clinic offers true neurofeedback or stimulation?

A simple way to tell the difference is to ask what the equipment actually does.

In true neurofeedback, sensors only record your brain’s electrical activity. That information is reflected back to you through subtle changes in sound or visuals. Nothing is sent into your brain. The process relies on your nervous system’s natural ability to recognize patterns and adjust itself through learning.

By contrast, brain stimulation methods actively deliver something to the brain—such as electrical current, magnetic pulses, or light—with the goal of altering neural activity directly. While these approaches may be helpful in some contexts, they are fundamentally different from feedback-based training.

If a provider emphasizes terms like stimulating, activating, or modulating the brain, it’s worth asking whether the method involves sending energy into the nervous system rather than providing feedback from it.

True neurofeedback works because your brain does the work, not the device. The technology serves as a mirror, not a driver.

At The Balanced Brain, we use feedback-only, evidence-based neurofeedback systems that respect the brain’s innate capacity for self-regulation. You remain in control throughout the process; the equipment simply provides information your nervous system can learn from over time.
